Well, would you look at that, me turning into a hand-holder. I couldn’t resist the temptation to reach out and touch her. Now I’m hauling around a sack of guilt like a small elephant for not clueing her in on the finale tonight. I should’ve brisked her off to a fancy steak house, the kind where she doesn’t look overdressed. She might just bail on me for a cab right once she sees what’s coming. Here’s to hoping she laughs it off rather than slapping me across the face.

She’s adorable in her red dress. My jeans are staging a protest. I swear, her lip biting antics could power a small city, especially when she’s teasing me. Oh, and don’t get me started on what it does to me when her Southern drawl slips out when she lets her guard down. And those boots I praised earlier, they ain’t got nothing on her high heels that are steeling the show. Those legs of hers are practically begging for my attention.

Our pork plates come as the rodeo starts. We chat between shows; her sharing some of her past, but I have a good suspicion she’s leaving out pertinent parts. With every word, I’m more turned on by her. Her laugh is infectious, and those bright green eyes of hers are like staring into twin suns.

By the time the last rider dusts off, we’ve demolished our grub, polished off an ice cream sundae, and drained a bucket of brews between us. I lean back, casually draping my arm over her chair, holding in a breath as the MC drops the bombshell.

“Tonight folks, we’re treating you to a good ol’ fashion tractor mud pull. Anyone up for it, head down to the muck.”

Her eyes widen, and for a moment, I think she’s going to be madder than a bumblebee robbed of its honey.

“You knew this entire time?” she squeaks like a mouse.

I bite the inside of my cheek, nodding guiltily.

She throws her head back, laughing. “I looked like a hog in slop.”

“You sure did,” I agree, grinning like a fool.

“I can’t believe you didn’t say anything,” she hoots louder.

“Care to have a repeat of your swim in the mud?” I motion with my head toward the tractors.

She glances down at her clothes. “This is the only dress I have left. I had to throw the other one out after it got baptized in mud. No way I was salvaging that mess.”

I lean in close to her ear. “You’ve got three options: skip the mud, risk the dress, or embrace the crowd’s wildest dreams of a naked mud romp.”

She’s still as a statue, except for her breath, making her chest heave like a wild broncho at the rodeo.

“Does that mean you’re considering option three, darlin?” I murmur, my voice dripping low like a creek at dust.

She turns to meet my gaze. “You first,” she challenges, a sparkle dancing in those now shadowed green eyes of hers.

“This bunch ain’t exactly clamoring to catch a glimpse of my backside,” I grunt.
